Sickle cell disease (SCD) refers to the disorder in which blood cells become abnormally sickle or crescent-shaped. This hinders the blood flow towards tissue and creates an oxygen-deprived condition. It is also called vaso-occlusive crisis or VOC. COVID (coronavirus disease) worsens this condition in the body as COVID renders shortness of breath in the patients decreasing the already decreased availibility of oxygen to body tissue. This is the reason SCD pateints are more at risk if COVID condition overlaps.
